Dr. Valerie Johnson

Hello MAVL Parents,

I am honored and excited to begin my work at MAVL! I have already been so impressed by the students, faculty, and staff who have made me feel welcome.

I would like to provide you with some information about my background. I began my educational career as an elementary music teacher in 1998. I then earned my master’s degree in school counseling and have K-12 experience as a school counselor. After achieving National Board certification in 2011, I learned the importance of ensuring that both teaching and learning occur in all classrooms through reflection of the video analysis process. This was a defining moment in my career, and since then, my passion for helping every student experience academic success has strengthened. I went on to earn my administrative certification and doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of South Alabama and have been the school principal at Semmes Elementary and Dunbar Magnet for the past seven years. I take my role as school leader seriously and work tirelessly to support all teachers in becoming experts in their content areas.

I live in Mobile and am married with two sons and a daughter-in-law. We are an active family and love to travel, hike, and eat great food.
